By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Holy Week is well observed in Benque Viejo del Carmen in the Cayo district with religious activities throughout the week.

Today, Good Friday, the day Jesus Christ died on the Cross, is a solemn day of fasting, abstinence, prayer and mourning. In Benque, Good Friday events include the reenactment of the Passion of Christ in the morning, a religious service in the afternoon, and the procession of the Holy Burial through the main streets of the town in the evening.

People living on both sides of the streets where the Good Friday procession will pass have been busy making colorful sawdust tapestries. These tapestries do not last very long because those participating in the Holy Burial procession pass over them, but it is an activity that many Benqueños like to do.

“After two of the longest years in our history, we will be back with the colorful and ephemeral art, the sawdust tapestries,” said the House of Culture in Benque, which together with other organizations is responsible for the organization of the activity.

“The organized routes are Church, Diaz, St. Joseph and part of Churchill Street. The material has been distributed and we thank all the participants and the faithful supporters for keeping the community alive during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Benque.

The Good Friday procession includes the Stations of the Cross during which the statue of Jesus Christ is carried on a huge platform and carried by the Cofradía del Señor Sepultado de Monte Carmelo (Mount Carmel Brotherhood of the Buried Lord), and accompanied by the Benque Viejo Fanfare.

The procession begins at 5:30 p.m. after the Good Friday liturgy at Mount Carmel Church. The liturgy includes the novena of divine mercy, the veneration of the cross and the reading of the passion of Christ. Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.
