Stranger Things 4x Butcher Billy: His Social Media Posters Are A Global Hit (13 pics)

Brazilian Pop Art illustrator Butcher Billy created a series of posters for the Netflix Stranger Things 4 production that captivated audiences and became a global phenomenon on social media and beyond.

The nine artworks – one for each episode of Season 4 of Stranger Things – resonate with the show’s 1980s vibe, playing on the aesthetics of old comic books, horror novel covers and movie posters. Designed specifically for the Stranger Things social media campaign, the artwork taps into the dark fantasy side of the story, giving fans a spooky alternative to standard promotional posters, which typically feature group shots of the characters.

“They’re not the usual art that’s done for a series. These play with the show’s specific iconography, symbols, and elements, focusing more on the gory and scary scenes without revealing too much of what’s going on. Overall, these are teasers for each chapter,” Butcher Billy said.

PHENOMENAL RESPONSE

Released one-by-one until episodes one through seven are released on May 27 and episodes nine and ten on July 1, the posters have garnered excitement from Stranger Things fans around the world. They’ve been liked tens of millions of times on Stranger Things’ Instagram account alone, with hundreds of millions of views across the show’s social media platforms.

Although originally intended for consumption on social media, the artworks have now been released as merchandise including posters, t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies in a Butcher Billy collection on the Netflix online store. Netflix reused the footage for outdoor advertising in Los Angeles.

“They asked me to adapt each piece to horizontal versions. It was a last minute thing, and I wasn’t sure at first because it was a very different canvas, but in the end they turned out as good, if not better, than the originals. It was exciting to see them in physical form spread all over LA,” Butcher Billy said.

IN THE WINGS

The project began in February 2022 when Netflix’s social media strategy agency Frank contacted Butcher Billy and IllustrationX about working on an upcoming hit sci-fi series, claiming the artist would be a contender. perfect.

“When I found out it was Stranger Things, and that the Duffer Brothers had loved my previous work and were the ones who suggested my name, I was thrilled to say the least,” Butcher Billy said.

Provided with the first screenings of the episodes, Butcher Billy was free to choose the ideas he thought would work best and select memorable and impactful quotes from the dialogue. Seeking a look and feel that alluded to 1980s video villains, horror movie posters and Stephen King book covers, he began sketching his ideas by hand. The compositions were then perfectly developed in Adobe Illustrator TM and Photoshop TM.

“I decided to design each piece in a way that didn’t make much use of an actor’s likeness unless it was strictly necessary. I would say the two that actually feature a character’s face were a little more challenging, with more revisions needed to make sure everyone was happy,” Butcher Billy said.

PERFECT SYNERGY

With his firm graphic style and heavily influenced by 80s comics, music, movies and computer games, Butcher Billy proved to be the ideal illustrator for the project. In 2017, he made his interest in Stranger Things known by creating a series of book covers called Strange tales – a personal project inspired by season two of the series.

He has also worked with Netflix in the past to create footage based on Queen’s Gambit and Cobra Kai, as well as a series of comic books and VHS covers based on Black Mirror.

“It seems like an ideal combo. I remember when Stranger Things first came out. It absolutely ticked the boxes for me, so finding out that the Duffers were fans and wanted me to try out on their turf felt like it was all spinning. I am overwhelmed with attention. People love the coins and share them everywhere. I received hundreds of comments, direct messages and emails with compliments,” Butcher Billy said.
