The Necessary Art of Bullying – October 18, 2022 – WELS

[Jesus] said, “In a certain town there was a judge who didn’t fear God and didn’t care what people thought. And there was a widow in this town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’”
Luke 18:2,3

The necessary art of bullying

Children are masters of it, even without much practice; it comes naturally – moaning, begging, pleading, nagging.

Young children have an advantage over adults; without so many earthly worries, they can get by with only one way of mind. The child who wants mom and dad to buy them something at the store asks and asks and asks again. And why? Because they understand the power of perseverance, especially when their parents are used to giving in.

But it must make God wonder about his own children. Why don’t they use the necessary art to harass him? Why, if they even think about asking their Heavenly Father for something, they only ask once or maybe twice and then give up?

Could it be that deep in their hearts they think prayer is powerless? Could it be that in the back of their minds they’re wondering if they’re asking someone who doesn’t actually exist? Could it be that they have convinced themselves that, even if there is a God, he is a miserly ogre and not a gracious and loving Father?

If God gets that impression of you, can you blame Him? After all, when was the last time you engaged in such relentless, persistent prayer that you were genuinely worried that your Heavenly Father was fed up with you and answered, “Enough! I heard you before! Truth be told, sinners like you and I are more likely to go several days without offering even a heartfelt, heartfelt prayer, let alone bombard the throne of God’s grace with a request after the other.

Yet our Heavenly Father patiently waits and listens. Through the saving work of Jesus, our sinful lack of persistent prayer is forgiven. It is as if we have lived lifetimes of perfectly persistent prayer. And we are making a fresh start. Let’s take advantage! Live a persistent prayer life starting today!

Dear Jesus, grant me the spiritual perseverance and endurance I need to offer my prayers to You tirelessly. Amen.
